Scalp Care 101: Why Healthy Hair Starts at the Scalp

Most of us spend our money on shampoo, masks and styling products, but the scalp gets ignored. At Park Avenue Salon in Deer Park, NY, we see it every week: when the scalp is out of balance, the hair shows it.

Signs your scalp needs attention

  • Flakes or itching between washes
  • Roots that get oily fast while the ends stay dry
  • Buildup from dry shampoo, hairspray or heavy styling products
  • Hair that looks flat at the root

A simple scalp routine

  1. Clarify once a week or two. A clarifying shampoo removes product buildup that regular shampoo leaves behind.
  2. Massage, don't scratch. Use your fingertips, not your nails, for about a minute while you shampoo.
  3. Keep conditioner on the lengths. Conditioner and masks belong on the mid-lengths and ends, not the scalp.
  4. Go easy on dry shampoo. It is a great between-wash fix, but it needs to be washed out properly.

When to see a professional

Ongoing redness, pain, sudden shedding or patches of hair loss are a reason to see a dermatologist or doctor. A stylist can help with buildup and product choices, but not medical scalp conditions.
